Installing Embedded TEX

Prerequisites

Embedded TEX makes use of the gold standards in math and music, TEX and Lilypond, together with the open-source PostScript processor, Ghostscript. You will need to install these applications before you can use Embedded TEX.

TEX

While you can use any Windows TEX installation, we recommend MiKTeX. Embedded TEX has been tested with MiKTeX version 2.4.

Download MiKTeX 2.4 now.

Visit MiKTeX's Web site to get the latest version.

Lilypond

To display music, you should install Lilypond. Embedded TEX has been tested with the latest versions of Lilypond (2.7.26 and 2.6.5).

Download Lilypond 2.6.5-1 now.

Visit Lilypond's Web site to get the latest version. Download the version marked "Microsoft Windows Install", not the Cygwin version.

Ghostscript

Embedded TEX has been tested with AFPL Ghostscript version 8.53. You can also use GNU Ghostscript, if you prefer.

Download AFPL Ghostscript 8.5.3 now.

Visit Ghostscript's Web site to get the latest version.

Installing Embedded TEX

First, you need to download the Embedded TEX installer from this Web site.

When you start the installer, you will be asked some questions about how you wish Embedded TEX to be installed.

User Type Dialog

Choose "Just This User" to install this program for your own use. You can install it even if you are not an administrator of the machine. The program will not be available for other users.

Choose "Entire Machine" to install this program for everyone who uses this computer. You must be an administrator of your machine, or have the appropriate permissions, to install in this way.

Custom Setup Dialog

Click "Browse" to pick a place to install Embedded TEX if you want to change it. If you are installing in "Just This User" mode, you may wish to change this location to somewhere to which you have permissions to write.

Configuring Embedded TEX

Once Embedded TEX is installed, you will need to make sure it knows the correct locations of TEX, Lilypond and Ghostscript. In your Start menu, under All Programs, you should have a menu marked "Embedded TEX".

Start Menu

Click the "Configure Embedded TEX" icon.

Configuration Dialog

In this dialog box, you can set a number of options for how you use Embedded TEX. For more details about what each section of this dialog box does, see Configuring Embedded TEX.

For a first-time user, you will want to make sure the three paths at the top correspond to your installation directories. If any of them are incorrect, double-click on them and click the Folder button, then choose the correct folder.

Variable Description
Ghostscript The path to the bin directory of your GNU or AFPL Ghostscript installation.
Lilypond The path to the bin directory of your Lilypond installation.
TeX The path to the bin directory of your TEX installation.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Embedded TEX. You can now try inserting equations and music into your Office applications.
