Using Embedded TEX

Inserting into Applications

Embedded TEX uses Microsoft ActiveX technology. This makes it compatible with the Microsoft Office suite of applications, as well as others that support ActiveX.

Embedded TEX has been tested with the following applications:

  • Microsoft Word 2003
  • Microsoft Excel 2003
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003
  • Microsoft WordPad
  • Microsoft Works 7.0

Embedded TEX does not operate in Internet Explorer. This is by design to avoid security issues.

To insert an Embedded TEX object into a document, open the Insert menu in your application and click Object:

Insert Object menu

The following box should appear:

Insert Object dialog

Choose Embedded TEX from the list and click OK.

The Preview Dialog Box

The preview dialog box appears when you first insert an Embedded TEX object, as well as when you double-click on the object to edit it.

Preview dialog

Source

The Source text box at the top of the dialog is where you enter your text - equation, music, or other fragment.

Preview

Click the Preview button to see the result of your text. If you select the Auto Preview check box, Embedded TEX will automatically preview what you type as you type it. This may result in errors if what you had typed isn't quite correct at the time it is processed; the preview box will "catch up" eventually.

Auto Preview is selected by default when you install Embedded TEX. If you wish to disable it by default, you can use the Configuration dialog box.

Application

Select the application you wish to use to process your text.

Template

Select the template you wish to use with your text.

Optimisation

This box allows you to choose the intended destination of the result.

If you are intending to use the document for on-screen viewing, choose "Display (low resolution)". Embedded TEX will sense the resolution (pixel size) of your monitor and use that to generate a picture designed for that resolution.

If you are intending to print the result, choose "Printing (high resolution)". Embedded TEX will output its bitmaps at 600 dots per inch (dpi), enough for high-quality output on a printer, but the output may be more blurry than display-optimised when viewed on the screen. Optimising for printing will also make your saved documents larger.

By default, Embedded TEX selects "Display". If you wish to optimise for printing by default, you can change this option in the Configuration dialog box.

Preview

This box will display what the output of processing your source text looks like.

Log

This box will display any messages output while TEX, Lilypond or some other application is processing your source text. If your source text could not be processed, you will probably see the reason why in the log.
